Threats & Consequences:
Suppose if a hacker hacks into a bank's system, he has access to all the credit card and debit card numbers of all the customers of the bank, Imagine how much he could steal. Or say if a hacker gets into the defense system of a country and is able to steal information and sell it to the country's enemy, Imagine what doom it could spell. Or if a hacker could break into a company's website server, he could deface the company's website which could damage the image of the company in the market.
Now we come to most dangerous threats of all..
Social Engineering through popular social networking sites like FaceBook, Orkut, etc.. are becoming very popular as people tend to TRUST people they make friends with online.
Suppose a hacker be-friends you on a social networking site, he becomes your good friend you trust, he slowly starts to extract all confidential information from you like username, password, bank account information, your company details, your company's IT infrastructure, etc.. with which he can plan further attacks.
There are various ways in which he can extract information, he can trick you in revealing it yourself, the hacker might monitor your intrests & hobbies, based on which he can send you a link by email or share a link on the social networking site which on clicking has your computer infected by virus, malware, trojans and what not. The hacker can then easily hack into or monitor your system for your confidential information that you enter online like your online baking details, your email id and password, etc..
OR
The hacker can call you on behalf of a bank, send emails posing as a legitimate bank with your pesonal details, he makes you click on a link which takes you to a fake bank website which looks same the original one. Since the hacker already has your personal information and the fake website looks same as the original one you are tricked into entering your username, password, credit card, debit card details on the fake website which in turn goes to the hacker.
OR
Most of the times by simply reading your profile on FaceBook or Orkut or etc..
The information revealed can be used against that person in a number of ways that you cannot even imagine..
In the worst case abduction, extortion and murder like of Adnan Patrawala by his friends who be-friended him on orkut. May Lord rest his soul in peace..
These are the threats of Information falling in wrong hands.. So, as we can see there can be dire consequnces of Information Theft. So folks, Let me ask you one more time. Now do you think information should be protected?
